Woods skills workshops at the Deanery Project

Forest Workshops in March at the Deanery Project Eastern Shore Forest Watch Association (ESFWA) is pleased to announce two upcoming workshops. Both will take place at the Deanery Project, 37 Deanery Road, Lower Ship Harbour on the Eastern Shore. www.thedeaneryproject.com Non Timber Forest Products – Forest Wealth, A Gentle Harvest Sunday, March 10 – 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. There are wonderfully diverse opportunities to create beautiful and functional objects, food and medicine from our forests. Join our presenters in hands-on learning about: maple and birch tapping for making syrup and beer use of small diameter green wood for making of furniture and hurdles hand carving spoons and other utensils collection of spruce gum for glue, healing, chewing and candles harvest and making of delicious chaga tea harvest and preparation of a medicinal tincture with Old Man’s Beard _________________________________________________________________ >From Horse Logging to Peaveys – Traditional Woodland Management Skills and Tools Sunday, March 22nd – 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. Join Lilly (a woods-loving Percheron mare), Terry Weeks and Tom Webber as they demonstrate traditional horse logging techniques. Learn to use simple hand tools like peaveys, “dogs” and buck saws to fell and move trees efficiently and safely – basic skills for working with our woodlots whether using a chain saw, horses or an axe. ——————————————————————————————————————————— These all-age workshops are part of an on-going series that explores low impact ways of working with our woodlots. They are largely geared to those of us new to forest ways, but are also meant to reach out to the many experienced voices on the Shore – we know the wisdom that lies within our community is where our biggest learnings are found. We invite those voices especially to come and share stories and skills with us. Eastern Shore Forest Watch Association (ESFWA) has been working on educational and research projects related to the Acadian forest since 1998. The March workshop series is funded by the Education and Outreach Initiative at Department of Natural Resources. Admission is free to Forest Watch members or $5 at the door.
