Board of Directors

Jessica Frenette
Chair and Email Communications
Jessica is originally from Tatamagouche, but has lived in Truro for many years now. Jessica has always had a love for the outdoors and wildlife. She loves hiking, gardening, camping and anything to do with being outside. About 6 years ago, Jessica started to become aware of the climate crisis, in particular the excessive waste that our society produces. This started her journey to low waste living. From there, Jessica’s passion for protecting the environment grew as she learned more. Jessica tries her best to live a low waste and sustainable lifestyle. Having a toddler at home, she enjoys sharing her love for the environment with her daughter, through using cloth diapers and practicing sustainability she is teaching her how to respect nature around her. Being a board member has given Jessica the opportunity to meet many people in the area who are working on environmental initiatives and gives her a sense of community. “It is reassuring to know that I’m not alone in this journey!”
Emily Hunter
Recording Secretary
Emily grew up outside Truro and moved back to Town after finishing her education. She works as a lawyer and also volunteers on the board of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. For fun, Emily enjoys hiking and spending time with her puppy, Bernie.

Mary Main
Active Transportation Committee Chair
Mary (she/her) is a lifelong resident of the Truro area who is all about building community to face the crises we’re up against. She loves bicycle rides along the Bay of Fundy, cooking with seasonal produce, and reading just about any book. Mary is the chair of Living Earth Council’s Active Transportation Committee, working with a small but mighty group of volunteers to plan events ranging from community bike rides to educational workshops. This isn’t her first involvement with LEC, though. From 2016-18, Mary was part of the planning committee for Truro Local Food Week, a week of events aimed at promoting local eating and reducing food waste. Community lies at the centre of Mary’s values, which is a big reason why she volunteers with LEC. Facing the climate crisis alone is a recipe for feeling powerless and isolated (she’s tried!), so she’s excited to be part of a group that is fostering a climate-positive future — and present — for the place she loves most. Plus, who doesn’t love bikes?

Audrey Balsor
Website and Grants
Audrey loves nature, and has her whole life. Spending so much time in the woods as a child paired with her core value of Community Connection has led to many enriching volunteer and paid positions – most recently as a volunteer for Living Earth Council and the Kings County Wildlife Association. Throughout the years it has become evident that unless we make some important systemic changes for our planet, our earth will experience devastating loss. This has spurred her drive for many volunteer positions. Being able to have a positive impact on her community, and also the environment has been a driving force in her adult life which has led to important work in sustainability in the communities of Truro (where she currently resides) as well as the Annapolis Valley where she grew up as a child.

Sarah Gallant
Treasurer
With family roots in Cumberland County, Sarah was raised in Mississauga, Ontario. After graduating from Dalhousie University and the University of Waterloo, she settled in Truro with her partner to practice optometry. When not at the office, Sarah loves trying plant-based recipes, tending to her plants, playing soccer, and reading. Sarah’s interest in climate change started when she spearheaded her elementary school’s first compost program. With time, she learned more about her own carbon footprint and continually takes steps to decrease it. Sarah hopes that being an LEC board member will help others in the community take steps to live more sustainably.
